Opportunity Class (OC) Minimum Entry Scores

by GEA | 02nd May 2023 |

Opportunity Classes (OC) are offered in 76 government primary schools and cater to academically gifted students in Years 5 and 6 with high potential. These dedicated classes enable students to learn at a more advanced level with other students of similar academic ability.

The OC application process begins from Year 4, when students sit the test for entry in Year 5 for a two-year placement program. For 2023 entry, Year 4 students will sit the test on Thursday 27 July, 2023.

Parents of students who wish to apply for OC must complete an “Intention to Apply” form provided by the school, then complete an online application. Please note applications for 2024 are closing on 15 May, 2023.

Test Structure

  • Reading – 25 items – 30 minutes
  • Mathematical Reasoning – 35 items – 40 minutes
  • Thinking Skills – 30 items – 30 minutes

*Please note that these marks vary from year to year.

How is the entry score determined?

Entry into OC is administered by the High Performing Students Unit of the NSW Department of Education and determined by two factors:

  1. Students’ results in the OC Test – English (reading comprehension), mathematical reasoning and thinking skills.
  1. Students’ school’s assessment of their performance in English and mathematics in Year 4 and occasionally Year 3.

The calculation of entry scores has been changed many times over the past few years. Currently, the NSW Department of Education has not released how they are calculating the scores in the future. Until last year, the calculated placement score is out of a total of 120 (previously 300).

The report received by parents upon release of the test results has also been changed this year.

Previously, students would receive an overall mark. The new report no longer shows a score but will show your child’s performance by placing your child in one of four bands for each subject:

  • top 10% of candidates
  • next 15% of candidates
  • next 25% of candidates
  • lowest 50% of candidate
