What is Thinking Skills and why is it included in OC & Selective School Tests?

One of the key sections on the Australian Opportunity Class (OC) and Selective School Placement Tests is the Thinking Skills section. Formerly known as General Ability, it’s a newer and more modern iteration of the test designed to measure a student’s reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking ability.

The reason behind this shift lies in the increasing emphasis placed on higher-order thinking in modern education. Instead of focusing solely on testing a student’s knowledge base, the Thinking Skills section looks at how well a student can analyse, synthesise and apply information to solve complex and previously unseen problems.

Why Is Thinking Skills Important?

In today’s world, students are exposed to an enormous amount of information every day – from the internet and the news media to textbooks and their classrooms. To succeed academically and beyond, it is no longer enough for students simply to memorise and recall information. They must also be able to:

* Analyse information and make reasoned decisions.

* Assess claims and evidence and form judgments.

* Draw logical conclusions from a set of information.

* Tackle unfamiliar problems logically and effectively.

The Thinking Skills test is a reflection of the desire for students to perform all of the above, especially under exam conditions. It is the component of the OC and Selective School Tests that most accurately assesses a student’s capacity for independent thought, intellectual flexibility, and genuine problem-solving.

The Two Components of the Thinking Skills Test

The Thinking Skills section is broadly split into two components:

1. Problem Solving

Problem Solving questions are designed to assess the student’s ability to use logic, numeracy and reasoning to work through problems they have never encountered before. This is predominantly numerical, although rather than simply requiring calculation, these questions will assess a student’s ability to interpret numerical information and apply logical methods to solve an unfamiliar problem.

The Problem Solving section is made up of 3 types of questions:

*Relevant Selection

Students are presented with a number of pieces of information, of which they need to identify only those that are necessary to answer a specific question. In essence, the student needs to ignore all irrelevant or misleading information, and focus only on that required for the solution.

*Finding Procedures

This section requires students to determine the most appropriate or logical method to use in order to solve a given problem. There may be a need to apply numerical reasoning, to be systematic, to experiment or to infer relationships to work out the logic of the process required to reach a solution.

*Identifying Similarity

The task here involves students comparing sets of information (this can be in the form of numbers, words, diagrams, etc.) to find similarities or patterns between them. It usually involves finding a relationship between items or completing a pattern with a missing piece.

2. Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking questions assess a student’s ability to analyse arguments and to identify weaknesses in reasoning, and to assess the strength of evidence. These questions are mostly Verbal or text-based and reflect real-world thought processes, particularly important when discerning fact from misinformation online.

According to the Australian Curriculum, “critical thinking is the core of most intellectual activity, and many other domains of human experience”, and this includes developing the skills required to construct arguments, draw logical conclusions, evaluate information, and support judgments with evidence. The critical thinking portion of the test focuses on assessing the following 7 key skills:

1. Identifying the Main Conclusion

Students are presented with a passage of information (usually two to three paragraphs) and asked to identify which of the provided options is the best-supported by the information presented in the passage.

2. Drawing a Conclusion

In this type of question, the student must draw a reasonable conclusion from the information given. This is a similar to Main Conclusion questions, except the conclusion will not be directly stated in the passage; rather, the student needs to make an educated inference.

3. Identifying Assumptions

An argument or piece of text will often make use of unstated assumptions – beliefs or premises that the writer takes for granted in order to reach their conclusion. The question requires the student to identify what these hidden assumptions are.

4. Assessing the Impact of Additional Evidence

The student is presented with a passage and a main argument. Following this, a piece of additional information is provided and the student must assess whether it strengthens, weakens or is irrelevant to the argument.

5. Detecting Reasoning Errors

The student is presented with a short argument and asked to identify any errors in its reasoning, or ‘fallacies’.

6. Matching Arguments

This section presents the student with a single argument and asks them to identify from a list of options another argument that is similar to it in structure or in the logic it uses.

7. Applying Principles

A general rule or principle is given to the student. They are then given a number of scenarios or arguments and asked to determine which of these correctly applies the stated principle.

Why Is Thinking Skills Important for OC and Selective Tests?

The OC and Selective school tests are not merely an assessment of academic rote learning. Rather, these exams are designed to identify the brightest minds with a proven aptitude for high-level learning and problem-solving. In the context of the modern educational landscape, Thinking Skills measures the most important attributes an academically gifted student can possess – their ability to:

* Reason logically and creatively

* Adapt to and analyse novel problems

* Make informed deductions

* Justify and evaluate conclusions effectively

In short, the Thinking Skills component offers a more holistic and effective measure of intelligence than any test purely focused on academic knowledge can provide. By testing innate logical and analytical ability over learnt material, these tests can effectively identify students who are inherently capable and driven to excel.
