Navigating the NAPLAN waters: Turning 2025 results into a launchpad for learning Parenting comes with a whole heap of tricky bits, and guiding your child’s education once the dust has settled on NAPLAN can be right up there. But by taking a thoughtful approach to your child’s 2025 NAPLAN results, you can make sure their learning stays on course and is fueled with purpose.

This year, a massive 1.3 million-plus students across more than 9,400 schools nationwide completed the NAPLAN assessment. That’s more than 4.5 million online tests, and as such, the 2025 NAPLAN results provide a rich vein of data for families and educators alike on student progress (ACARA, 2025).

Context is key to understanding results

The first port of call should be your child’s NAPLAN Student Report. This will highlight their performance across four bands: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs Additional Support. You can also see how their scores stack up against the national average, results from your state and from their peers.

Crucially, the report also makes the data comparative – it shows results on a national level, within your state and also school cohort. However, AERO also states that:

The best source for advice if you’re unclear about how to interpret the results and how to best assist your child in the classroom is his teacher. Your teacher can also often determine what factors contributed to the scores in the first place.

Set Specific, Targeted Learning Goals

Once you understand where your child’s strengths lie and which areas they might need a little bit of extra support with, now’s the time to come up with a learning goal. For instance:

* if they are performing at Developing level for reading, you can encourage them to read a novel and a factual book each month and have a conversation with them about it.
* for numeracy, you can find ways to practice concepts such as fractions or problem solving on a daily or weekly basis.

Our role as parents is central to our child’s continued development. Here are just some quick and easy ideas to extend learning at home:

*Read together on a regular basis and discuss the material to increase comprehension.
*Help with homework by facilitating rather than providing answers.
*Integrate learning opportunities into daily routines- measure things while cooking, make up budgets while grocery shopping, or text using correct grammar and spelling to increase writing proficiency. Parental involvement is one of the greatest indicators of student achievement and most strongly associated with it in the infant and primary years.

NAPLAN tests only a limited number of skills and is only a snapshot. The test does not address creativity, critical thinking, curiosity, perseverance or any of the other many qualities that can contribute to a child’s overall development.
