Selective & Scholarship Tutoring

A: This course prepares Year 4 and 5 students for the Selective School Placement Test students sit in Year 6 for year 7 entry. The course focuses on the 4 topics of the test Thinking Skills, Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Writing.
Q: What is the Selective School Test?
A: The Selective School Test is a competitive entrance exam for academically gifted students applying for selective high schools. It typically includes Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills, and Writing.
Q: Is selective high school test hard?
A: The selective school test is quite challenging. It is also becoming less predictable every year. Hence, students need to be equipped with exceptional problem-solving skills and be independent in their thinking.
Students need to complete 4 exams in one go. The need to have high level of problem-solving skills, analytical skills and also great exam techniques and time management skills. They need to know what to do if they encounter a question they have never seen before.
Q: What year level should my child be in to start preparing?
A: Most students begin preparation in Year 3 before they sit the OC test and include that as part of their stepping stone for preparing for the Selective. Otherwise, it’s Year 4 or Year 5, with the test taken in Year 6 for Year 7 entry.

A: Our program covers all components of the test: Reading comprehension, Mathematical reasoning, Thinking skills (problem solving & critical thinking) and Writing (creative and persuasive). We also focus on exam strategies, time management, and stress reduction techniques.

OC Tutoring
Q: What is an Opportunity Class (OC)?
A: Opportunity Classes are for academically gifted students. They offer enriched learning environments within select NSW public schools for years 5 & 6. Entry is based on a competitive placement test sat in the first part of Year 4.
Q: What does the OC test include?
A: The test consists of three parts: Reading, Mathematical reasoning and Thinking skills. There is no writing section. The questions are multiple choice and test problem-solving and critical thinking.
Q: What year should my child start preparing?
A: Most students begin preparation in Year 3 to build a strong foundation, but many also start in early Year 4. We offer both standard and accelerated programs to suit different timelines.

GEA GENIUS PATHWAY

A: GEA Genius is an educational pathway offered by GEA for students wanting to prepare for the OC Placement Test, the Selective High School Placement Test, and/or a scholarship test. This course takes them from Year 3 to the end of Year 6.
